Albany TV Sportscaster Dan Murphy Races 24 Continuous Hours To Benefit Children's Hospital

The marathon racing continues...

10:15pm, Friday
elapsed time: 9 hours, 45 minutes

Some of the staff from Johnny Rockets came over after they closed to cheer for Dan. One Johnny Rockets employee rode shotgun and turned out to be Dan's biggest fan. Dan appeared on the local TV news twice and appeared on the 6 o'clock and 11 o'clock live recaps.

11:45pm, Friday
elapsed time: 11 hours, 15 minutes

The local ABC News staff came down after the 11 o'clock News to challenge their colleague in some friendly competition.

At the stroke of twelve, a 100 lap competition began and the Midnight Racers strapped in for an hour-long endurance race. Four NSMS regulars came in to race against Dan.

3:15am, Saturday
elapsed time: 14 hours, 45 minutes

Since Dan doesn't drink coffee and hasn't had any caffeine all night, he's strictly running on his own motivation and stamina...and a little sugar. Donuts were brought in around 3am for a little sugar boost to snack on with some fat free milk.

6:30am, Saturday
elapsed time: 18 hours, 0 minutes

At 6:30am, another competition began. The top three racers stand with Dan, the Winner's Cup held by Mike Scorzelli, who won the race.

12:30pm, Saturday
elapsed time: 24 hours, 0 minutes

Billy Piskutz, Jr., Asst. Director of Development at the Albany Children's Hospital, shakes hands with Dan Murphy after the last race that ended at 12:25pm. Dan raised over $6,000 during this event at the Speedway - congratulations to a man of endurance and to the Children's Hospital for a great success.

Mission accomplished...after 24-hours of straight racing, here's Dan holding the trophy with Jay Goldstien and the major sponsor of this event, Freihofer's. The trophy was filled with helpful prizes to help him recuperate -- Gatorade, a heat pack, BenGay, Power Bars...what he needs most is a pillow and a quiet place to rest. "I don't feel tired," Dan commented when asked how he was holding up, "I'm just a little sore." Dan was looking forward to an afternoon of rest after racing 160 races and over 3100 miles. Would he do it again? "I'd absolutely do it again." The Hospital has plans to promote this event again for next year to make it an even bigger success.
